About MACODA

Who We Are

Malawi Council for Disability Affairs(MACODA) formally known as Malawi Council for the Handicapped(MACOHA) is a legally mandated Council established by the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2024 to promote and protect the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities, provide simplified and cost effective mechanism for redress in cases of breach of the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities, and overlooks the management and administration of the Disability Trust Fund as well as registration of persons with disabilities, institutions, associations and organisations implementing disability programmes in Malawi. MACODA was established to provide rehabilitation services to person with disabilities in the areas of health, education, empowerment, livelihood and social inclusion. It works in collaboration with other service providers to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left out in the society since disability is a cross cutting issue.

Our Objectives

MACODA's Objectives

MACODA has the following main objectives to guide its programmes and services.

  • To empower persons with disabilities through access to essential services such as education, health and livelihood.
  • Provide appropriate and required vocational skills training to persons with disabilities both at MACODA's training institutions and within the community through the Community Based Rehabilitation programme (CBR).
  • Promote attitude change towards persons with disabilities through public awareness.
  • Register and regulate the work of service providers in the disability sector
  • Maintain a register of persons with disabilities and their organisations.
  • Provide placement services for persons with disabilities into open employment or Council's own production units.
  • Provide or facilitate medical rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities whose disabilities require medical intervention to improve mobility or functional capacities.
  • Encourage and facilitate the formation of business groups or individual self-employment undertakings.
