The International Human Rights Silver Jubilee celebrations brought Mangochi Stadium to life with a vibrant showcase of Malawi's commitment to human rights. Organised by the Malawi Human Rights Commission in partnership with various stakeholders, the event was graced by the State Vice President, Dr Michael Usi.
The celebrations kicked off with a lively parade from the Mangochi Education Offices to the stadium, followed by captivating performances, including traditional dances, band music, and poetry recitations. A key highlight of the day was the inspection of pavilions, where the Vice President and dignitaries witnessed the exceptional work of participating organisations.
At its pavilion, the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) proudly displayed its rehabilitation and empowerment initiatives for persons with disabilities. Exhibits included intricately hand-woven products from Bangwe Factory and vocational tools created at the Kamuzu Vocational Rehabilitation and Training Centre (KVRTC). These showcased MACODA’s dedication to fostering self-reliance and full participation in society for persons with disabilities.
Mercy Mpunga, Chief Centre Manager for Bangwe Factory, and Joseph Galanje, Head of Training at KVRTC, had the privilege of briefing the Vice President on the impact of their centres. They highlighted how rehabilitation programs and vocational training empower persons with disabilities to achieve independence and dignity.
The day concluded with inspiring speeches that reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to inclusivity. MACODA’s participation underscored its pivotal role in advancing empowerment for persons with disabilities as a central tenet of the nation’s human rights agenda.
