The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has accredited MACODA as an election observer for the 16 September 2025 General Elections. For the first time in Malawi’s elections, MEC has captured data on registered voters with disabilities: 137,925 representing 1.92% of all registered voters. Disaggregated data show visual impairments (18,567); hearing impairments (13,604); speech impairments (5,361); upper limb disabilities (2,531); and other forms of disabilities (101,981).
MACODA issued disability certificates to 95 aspiring candidates with disabilities. Of these, 78 candidates with disabilities have been approved by MEC to contest as either Members of Parliament (MP) or Ward Councillors. 18 persons with disabilities are contesting as MPs (15 males and 3 females) and 60 as Councillors (51 males and 9 females). Of the 78, 34 are contesting as independent candidates.
