On 24th July, 2025, the Board Chairperson of MACODA, Alex Dzinkambani made a visit to Bangwe Factory in Blantyre and Kamuzu Vocational and Rehabilitation Training Centre (KVRTC) in Chiradzulu, accompanied by other board members Fungai Mutsinze and Gloria Kampondeni. The visit was aimed at appreciating the operations of the two centres, identifying sustainable revenue-generating opportunities and exploring lasting solutions to challenges faced by both institutions.
Bangwe Factory, MACODA’s key production unit, is a beacon of empowerment for persons with disabilities, offering vocational training and employment across four main departments of Weaving, Tie and Dye, Tailoring, and Screen Printing. The Weaving Department specializes in creating beautifully crafted items such as carpets, rugs, table mats, wall hangings, and purses. The Tie and Dye Department produces high-quality, non-fading fabric materials and garments, including traditional wear in a variety of vibrant designs. In the Tailoring Department, industrial garments and uniforms are manufactured, while the Screen Printing Department is known for its creative designs that depict local scenes, logos, and branded shopping bags. These departments not only equip trainees with skills but also contribute to income generation.
At KVRTC, the board members observed various vocational training programmes being offered free of charge to persons with disabilities and at a fee to youths without disabilities. The skills include Metal Work, Carpentry, Agriculture, Tailoring and Designing, among others. The centre plays a crucial role in empowering trainees by equipping them with practical skills that can lead to employment or self-employment thereby promoting independence and improving their quality of life.
The visit concluded with commendations and recommendations from the Board Chairperson who applauded the dedication of staff and trainees and reaffirmed MACODA’s commitment to creating an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are fully supported and empowered to contribute meaningfully to national development.
